Resolution for AACC Board of Directors – Partnership with the Peace Corps
WHEREAS, The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) actively advocates an international role for community colleges in all dimensions of worldwide education and training; and
WHEREAS, community colleges play a critical role to ensure that individuals can function successfully in a multicultural and advanced technological environment that crosses all boundaries of education, communications, language and business; and
WHEREAS, the AACC Office of International Programs and Services works to facilitate person-to-person international experiences and cooperation; and
WHEREAS, large numbers of community college graduates and students studying at community colleges have the technical skills and experience to respond to the critical needs of countries throughout the world, especially in the areas of agriculture, health, youth development, business, computer science, construction and forestry; and
WHEREAS, the Peace Corps desires to increase the number of community college graduates serving as Peace Corps Volunteers; and
WHEREAS, Peace Corps Volunteers make significant and lasting contributions around the world in agriculture, business development and information technology, education and youth and community development, the environment, and health and HIV/AIDS; and
WHEREAS, Peace Corps Volunteers, enriched by their experiences overseas, have brought their communities throughout the United States a deeper understanding of other cultures and traditions; and
WHEREAS, Peace Corps Volunteers gain valuable cross-cultural experience and improve their foreign language skills, providing a foundation for successful careers in today’s global marketplace; Now Therefore
Be It Resolved by the Board of Trustees of the American Association of Community Colleges:
That we support the Peace Corps’ efforts to increase the number of community college graduates serving as Peace Corps Volunteers and
Be It Further Resolved that we encourage community colleges across the nation to collaborate with the Peace Corps to increase awareness about the opportunities for community college graduates to serve as Volunteers.
