Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of Human Resources. Located close to the nation’s capital, Northern Virginia Community College is Virginia’s largest institution of higher education and one of America’s largest community colleges. A key member of the Administrative Services Division, the Director of Human Resources is responsible for providing strategic leadership to the Human Resources department, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, local, DHRM, VCCS and NOVA policies and procedures. The Director has broad responsibility for developing and reviewing policies and procedures that promote the college’s strategic plan and the development of a highly skilled and service-oriented workforce. The Director oversees the planning and execution of key human resource functions, including recruitment, benefits, classification, compensation, employee relations, training and development, and human resource information systems. The Director has an understanding of and a commitment to the mission of a community college.
The successful candidate will have significant supervisory experience with the ability to work collaboratively with the Associate Directors in leading the Human Resources Department. Reporting directly to the Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer the Director will demonstrate a highly developed sense of fairness and a strong commitment to ethical standards, expertise in organizational development, continuous process improvement, and change management. Candidates must possess excellent interpersonal skills, be able to interact comfortably with people of different levels of education, cultural background, and experience. The Director’s role is solution-oriented and works collaboratively across HR units and other departments and divisions to facilitate constructive problem solving. The Director must communicate with tact and diplomacy while being assertive about the need to follow policies and procedures and demonstrate commitment to increasing the understanding of human resources policies and processes. In-depth knowledge of human resources best practices, processes, and procedures is desired as well as a sound understanding of how to integrate multiple Human Resources Information systems (i.e., HRMS, ATS , etc.) to improve efficiencies, processes, and quality of service. The successful candidate will demonstrate creativity and sophisticated analytical skills, experience managing complex budgets and display concern about accountability and metrics as a means to strengthen the quality of service delivery.
At a minimum the successful candidate should possess ten years of progressively responsible experience in human resources management, preferably in a public or educational setting. A Master’s Degree in Human Resources or related field is preferred.
