Dallas Herring Professorship in Community College Education
This tenure-track appointment at the rank of full professor in Community College Education will begin in August 2014, subject to the availability of the successful candidate. The Professor will provide leadership, instruct, and conduct research, to improve community college education to extend the distinguished legacy of William Dallas Herring's contributions to lifelong learning. The position provides unique opportunities to work with local and state educational policymakers and higher education and community college leaders on projects of mutual interest. Candidates must have an earned doctorate in higher or adult education or a related area, leadership in the community college sector, significant productivity in policy or research, success in generating external funding, and experience teaching and supervising graduate students. Required skills include visionary leadership, policy or research expertise in important areas of community college performance and/or labor force development, the ability to work effectively with policy makers and community college leaders, and the capacity to attract and supervise graduate students. Experience with distance education, executive doctoral programs, and involvement in international scholarly and professional networks is preferred.
The successful candidate will provide leadership and work collaboratively with policymakers and community college leaders at the local, state and national levels to further enhance community colleges’ success for a diverse society and global workforce, conduct scholarly or policy research on pressing educational problems, generate external grant-funding, publish and communicate in high impact media. The individual will engage in collaborative research with faculty in the College and the Friday Institute, teach courses in the department's Adult and Community College Education program in Raleigh and its site-based doctoral program located at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, provide leadership for a new executive doctoral program, recruit and advise graduate students, contribute to the intellectual diversity of the department, and mentor junior faculty members.
