Current Horizons Colleges (2009-2012)
In September 2009, AACC selected eight community colleges to create and support replicable and sustainable models of service learning that addressed the economic downturn in their communities. Experienced service learning practitioners at these eight colleges mentored faculty and staff from eight additional colleges from 2010 through 2011.
Research from this cohort of colleges indicates that service learning students are more committed to obtaining their educational goals and more confident of success in an academic environment. Ninety-two percent of community partners said that service learning students increased their capacity to meet local needs and provided valuable services to their constituents, particularly in light of the continuing recession.
