Free Webinars on Completion, Pregnancy Prevention

8/6/2012

The American Association of Community Colleges and The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy are pleased to co-host two free webinars for community college faculty and staff.

Online Lessons: Preventing Unplanned Pregnancy and Completing College (click to register)
Wednesday, August 15, 1:00-2:00 pm EDT

As part of the effort to improve college students’ success and completion, The National Campaign has published free online lessons that will help students prevent unplanned pregnancy. The lessons are designed to help students understand the impact of unplanned pregnancy on their educational goals, their social lives, their significant relationships, and their finances. Students learn about various birth control methods; select the most appropriate method(s) for their values, lifestyles, and relationships; and create an action plan to decrease their chances of unplanned pregnancy.

In the webinar, the authors will give a brief demonstration of the lessons and provide helpful information about how instructors can incorporate them into first-year experience, college success, and other courses. In addition, two instructors who piloted the lessons this past spring semester will share their experiences and the feedback they received from students.

Make It Personal: College Completion (click to register)
Thursday, September 13, 3:00-4:00 pm EDT

This webinar will highlight curriculum resources developed by and for college faculty to help students delay pregnancy or having another child until after they have completed their educational goals. Sixty-one percent of women who have children while attending community college do not finish their course work.

Participants in AACC’s Make It Personal: College Completion project will share course templates they developed in varying disciplines and discuss how and why they integrated pregnancy planning and prevention topics into their course objectives.  The templates are intended for adaptation and use by other community college faculty.

They include standard features such as academic objectives, pregnancy planning/prevention objectives, preparation, materials, assessment, and service learning activities.  Faculty teaching the courses found that students were more engaged in their learning and recognized the importance of pregnancy planning and prevention to complete their college goals.
